Fast Methods for Fast Computers

Dr. Stephen Wandzura

Hughes Research Laboratories

Abstract:   The emergence of a new class of methods for physical simulation and modeling is described and analyzed. Basic economics is responsible for the emergence of new algorithms based on old mathematics. The mutual leverage of computation and analysis has motivated and rewarded the conjuring of new fast methods on the one hand, and magnified the value of modern hardware on the other. Examples of the great advances in problem size and accuracy obtainable are taken from the field of computational electromagnetics.
