CSCAMM welcomes Professor Gadi Fibich from Tel-Aviv University as a KI-Net/CSCAMM visitor for FY15. Prof. Fibich research interests include, among others, theory numerics and experiments of nonlinear optics, auctioning and marketing, queuing theory and computer graphics.

CSCAMM welcomes Assistant Professor Jacob Bedrossian as a new CSCAMM faculty member with a joint appointment in the Department of Mathematics. Prof. Bedrossian's research interests include stability and mixing in fluids and plasmas, calculus of variations and pattern formation, chemotaxis models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

2014

Congratulations to Dr. Thomas Rey. He accepted a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Universite de Lille.

Congratulations to Thomas Rey and his wife Fred, on the birth of their son Camille Rey on Tuesday November 26th.

Professor Kayo Ide will speak on “The Role of the Antarctic Polar Vortex and Rossby Wave Breaking on Large-Scale Stirring in the Lower Stratosphere” at the Tenth Annual Symposium of the Burgers Program for Fluid Dynamics, Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 4:35-5pm in the Kay Boardroom of the Kim Building.

Doron Levy, Mathematics and Center for Scientific Computation & Mathematical Modeling will give the Distinguished Scholar-Teacher (DST) Lecture “The Mathematics of Cancer” on November 7, 4:00 PM, 1410 Physics.

A meeting of CSCAMM faculty with AMSC students will be held at the Center for Scientific Computation and Mathematical Modeling (CSCAMM) on Nov 1 from 10am to noon. The meeting will provide a platform for presentation of CSCAMM faculty research and Q&A with AMSC students. A follow-up lunch 12-1pm will be hosted by CSCAMM. Click here for a schedule of talks.

The Maryland Mathematical Modeling Contest (M3C) is a new intramural competition based on the international Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). M3C seeks to mimic the structure of the MCM, and M3C winners have the opportunity to compete in the MCM as well. More information can be found here.

CSCAMM welcomes Dr. Yongyong Cai from National University of Singapore, as a new KI-Net Post-Doctoral Research Associate with Prof. Tadmor. His post-doc is split between the Math department at UW Madison and CSCAMM at UMd.

The CSCAMM seminar room audio-visual system was upgraded over winter break. The new A/V system includes an easy-to-use Room Control system, identical to the system found in rooms campus wide. This system controls a new full HD projector and matching wide-format screen.
Our thanks to CSCAMM's IT Manager, Jeff Henrikson, who worked tirelessly on making this upgrade possible.

A new NSF award: KI-net -- “Kinetic description of emerging challenges in multiscale problems of natural sciences”.

A five-year $5M NSF collaborative proposal for a new Research Network in Math Sciences (RNMS) was awarded Feb. 16, 2012. Research Networks is a recent new mode of operation for the Math Sciences in the NSF. The ultimate goal of the KI-net is the development, analysis and computation of novel kinetic descriptions with various applications in quantum dynamics with applications to chemistry, to network dynamics with applications to social sciences, and to kinetic models of biological processes. It will be centered around three hubs: CSCAMM serving as the leading hub (PI: Eitan Tadmor CSCAMM/Math/IPST) together with ICES at UT Austin hub (PI: I. Gamba), and the Department of Mathematics at the UW-Madison hub (PI: S. Jin). At the initial stage, they will inter-connect 12 nodes through a series of edges, involving 25 core participants.

2011

Congratulations to Valerie and Alan Lum on the birth of their healthy baby boy. Garrett Lum was born December 18th weighing in at a healthy 8 lbs 9 oz. Mom and baby are doing well.

Prof. Dionisios Margetis, Department of Mathematics, IPST and CSCAMM, was the plenary speaker of the Fall meeting of Washington-Baltimore Section of the SIAM, held on WEDNESDAY, November 16, in the Clipper Room in Shriver Hall on the Homewood Campus of Johns Hopkins University.
Prof. Margetis presented a lecture entitled "A Tale of Two Scales:   From discrete schemes to Partial Differential Equations in epitaxial growth."

CSCAMM welcomes Professor Pierre-Emmanuel Jabin as a new CSCAMM faculty member (a joint appointment with the department of Mathematics). Prof. Jabin's research interests include transport equations, mathematical models for biology, kinetic equations, and many-particles systems.

Congratulations to Dr. Suleyman Ulusoy. He has accepted a position as Assistant Professor at Zirve University in Gaziantep, Turkey.

On May 11, Prof. Radu Balan (CSCAMM and Math) gave the Washington-Baltimore Section of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) expository lecture entitled "Sparse Component Analysis: Use of Statistical Methods and Sparse Signal Representations in Convolutive Blind Source Separation Problems"

Martin Prize, Prof. Joel Tropp and Prof. Adam Oberman, gave talks on "Finding structure with randomness: Probabilistic algorithms for constructing low-rank matrix decompositions" and, respectively, on "Discrete Geometric Game Interpretations of Nonlinear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations" at the Monroe H. Martin Lectures on April 13th.

The CSCAMM seminar on March 30 featured a talk by Dr. Charles W. Clark and Dr. Bruce R. Miller of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on "The NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions".

CSCAMM welcomes Alina Chertock - North Carolina State University, Maria Lukacova - Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Jose Carrillo - Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Christian Klingenberg - University of Würzburg, and Jorge Balbas - California State University, Northridge who will be visiting CSCAMM during the month of March 2011.

2010

Doron Levy (CSCAMM/Math) was appointed to the Editorial Board of the "Bulletin of Mathematical Biology" a leading journal devoted to research on computational, theoretical and experimental biology and the official journal of the Society for Mathematical Biology.

CSCAMM welcomes Dr. Courtney Davis as a new Post-Doctoral Research Associate. She comes to us from the University of Utah.

There was a live webcast of the 2010 Tutorial School on Fluid Dynamics: Topics in Turbulence. This webcast was open to all. The webcast began with the "Welcoming Remarks" at 8:45 am EDT on Monday May 24th, and continue through Thursday May 28th. A schedule of events is posted.

Congratulations to John Silberholz (CSCAMM Undergraduate) who has accepted admission to grad school at MIT, got an NSF graduate fellowship application, was chosen as one of the 5 undergraduate researchers of the year at UMD, and was chosen as outstanding senior in the Math department.

Congratulations to Doron Levy (CSCAMM/Mathematics) who has been awarded a 2008-2009 Departmental Award for Excellence and Innovation in Undergraduate Teaching. The award, from the Center for Teaching Excellence, is for his development of a new calculus course that specifically targets Biology majors.

Congratulations to John Silberholz who was awarded a Goldwater scholarship. The Goldwater scholarships is a very prestigious undergraduate national competition for which UM is entitled to nominate 4 candidates.

Professors Manuel Tiglio and Bill Dorland (Physics/IREAP) received a 'professor partnership' award from NVIDIA to support their research on heterogeneous computing. Their research groups are using NVIDIA's CUDA and Teslas supercomputers to numerically simulate black holes

Professors Eitan Tadmor (Math/CSCAMM/IPST) and Thanos Tzavaras (Math) were awarded a National Science Foundation Focus Research Group (FRG) grant: Kinetic Description of Multiscale Phenomena: Modeling, Theory and Computation.
This is a collaborative award which involves researchers from the universities of Maryland (as the lead institution), Brown, Iowa State, Wisconsin-Madison, Arizona State, Texas-Austin and Toulouse, France. The FRG will be housed at CSCAMM. Among its goals, this FRG is expected to provide a platform for interdisciplinary interactions with researchers from related disciplines working on kinetic descriptions of complex phenomena, including those from the DOE Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics (CMPD) which is also housed in CSCAMM.

Professor Doron Levy (CSCAMM/Math) and Professor Wolfgang Losert (Physics/IREAP/IPST) have organized a Research Interaction Team (RIT) on Cancer Dynamics.  [colloquium schedule]

Paul Cassak’s thesis entitled Catastrophe Model for the Onset of Fast Magnetic Reconnection, advised by Professors James F. Drake and Michael Shay, was awarded the 2008 F. L. Scarf dissertation award by the Space Physics and Aeronomy Section of the American Geophysical Union. Paul Cassak graduated in 2006 while being supported by the Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics (CMPD).

MONROE H. MARTIN PRIZE

THE INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND, College Park, is pleased to announce the Seventh Monroe H. Martin Prize. The prize will be awarded for an outstanding paper in applied mathematics (including numerical analysis) by a young research worker. Candidates must be residents of North America and have not reached their 36th birthday by July 31, 2005. The submitted paper must be by a single author and have been published or accepted for publication in the open literature. The work must not have been performed in connection with the completion of requirements for an academic degree. The candidate must neither be, nor have been, affliated with the University of Maryland.

Applications from qualified candidates, or nominations, are solicited for the Monroe H. Martin prize. Entries should include a copy of the paper or contribution, with a covering letter, and for full consideration be submitted before July 31, 2005 to

Previous prize winners are Neil Berger (1975), Marshall Slemrod (1980), Jonathan Goodman (1985), Marek Rychlik (1990), A. M. Stuart (1995), Z. Xia (1995), R.J. McCann (2000), and Y. Grabovsky (2000).

A new DOE fusion science center, the Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics (CMPD), was awarded jointly to the University of Maryland and UCLA. In Maryland, CMPD will be hosted by CSCAMM.

Orbach, Director of the Department of Energy's Office of Science, announced the selection of the University of Maryland/University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Rochester to host two new Fusion Science Centers. "These two Fusion Science Centers will strengthen basic research into the frontiers of fusion science, a central mission of the department’s fusion energy sciences program,” Dr. Orbach said. “The centers will train students to meet the U.S. fusion program’s future needs and help our fusion program communicate about our progress and accomplishments with the broader scientific community.” The University of Maryland and UCLA will jointly host the Center for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics (CMPD) using facilities at both of the schools. WILLIAM DORLAND, Physics/CSCAMM/IREAP, is the Co-Principal Investigator and will direct UMD’s participation in CMPD which is housed within the Center for Scientific Computation and Mathematical Modeling (CSCAMM) – a recent major initiative within the College to promote research activity in new algorithms and mathematical modeling in the physical sciences.
