CSCAMM welcomes Professor Gadi Fibich from Tel-Aviv University as a KI-Net/CSCAMM visitor for FY15. Prof. Fibich research interests include, among others, theory numerics and experiments of nonlinear optics, auctioning and marketing, queuing theory and computer graphics.
CSCAMM welcomes Assistant Professor Jacob Bedrossian as a new CSCAMM faculty member with a joint appointment in the Department of Mathematics. Prof. Bedrossian's research interests include stability and mixing in fluids and plasmas, calculus of variations and pattern formation, chemotaxis models and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

The Maryland Mathematical Modeling Contest (M3C) is a new intramural competition based on the international Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM). M3C seeks to mimic the structure of the MCM, and M3C winners have the opportunity to compete in the MCM as well. More information can be found here.

His post-doc is split between the Math department at UW Madison and CSCAMM at UMd.
The CSCAMM seminar room audio-visual system was upgraded over winter break. The new A/V system includes an easy-to-use Room Control system, identical to the system found in rooms campus wide. This system controls a new full HD projector and matching wide-format screen.

A new NSF award: KI-net -- “Kinetic description of emerging challenges in multiscale problems of natural sciences”.
A five-year $5M NSF collaborative proposal for a new Research Network in Math Sciences (RNMS) was awarded Feb. 16, 2012. Research Networks is a recent new mode of operation for the Math Sciences in the NSF. The ultimate goal of the KI-net is the development, analysis and computation of novel kinetic descriptions with various applications in quantum dynamics with applications to chemistry, to network dynamics with applications to social sciences, and to kinetic models of biological processes. It will be centered around three hubs: CSCAMM serving as the leading hub (PI: Eitan Tadmor CSCAMM/Math/IPST) together with ICES at UT Austin hub (PI: I. Gamba), and the Department of Mathematics at the UW-Madison hub (PI: S. Jin). At the initial stage, they will inter-connect 12 nodes through a series of edges, involving 25 core participants.

Martin Prize, Prof. Joel Tropp and Prof. Adam Oberman, gave talks on "Finding structure with randomness: Probabilistic algorithms for constructing low-rank matrix decompositions" and, respectively, on "Discrete Geometric Game Interpretations of Nonlinear Elliptic Partial Differential Equations" at the Monroe H. Martin Lectures on April 13th.
The CSCAMM seminar on March 30 featured a talk by Dr. Charles W. Clark and Dr. Bruce R. Miller of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on "The NIST Digital Library of Mathematical Functions".

Professors Eitan Tadmor (Math/CSCAMM/IPST) and Thanos
Tzavaras (Math) were awarded a National Science
Foundation Focus Research Group (FRG) grant: Kinetic
Description of Multiscale Phenomena: Modeling, Theory
and Computation.
This is a collaborative award which involves researchers
from the universities of Maryland (as the lead
institution), Brown, Iowa State, Wisconsin-Madison,
Arizona State, Texas-Austin and Toulouse, France. The
FRG will be housed at CSCAMM.
Among its goals, this FRG is expected to provide a
platform for interdisciplinary interactions with
researchers from related disciplines working on kinetic
descriptions of complex phenomena, including those from
the DOE Center for
Multiscale Plasma Dynamics (CMPD) which is also
housed in CSCAMM.

MONROE H. MARTIN PRIZE
THE INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY at the

announce the Seventh Monroe H. Martin Prize. The prize
will be awarded for an outstanding paper in applied
mathematics (including numerical analysis) by a young
research worker. Candidates must be residents of North
America and have not reached their 36th birthday by July
31, 2005. The submitted paper must be by a single author
and have been published or accepted for publication in
the open literature. The work must not have been
performed in connection with the completion of
requirements for an academic degree. The candidate must
neither be, nor have been, affliated with the University
of Maryland.
Applications from qualified candidates, or nominations,
are solicited for the Monroe H. Martin prize. Entries
should include a copy of the paper or contribution, with
a covering letter, and for full consideration be

Previous prize winners are Neil Berger (1975), Marshall
Slemrod (1980), Jonathan Goodman (1985), Marek Rychlik
(1990), A. M. Stuart (1995), Z. Xia (1995), R.J. McCann

From CMNS News: On May 27, Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, Director of the Department of Energy's Office of Science, announced the selection of the University of
Maryland/University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Rochester to host two new Fusion Science Centers. "These two Fusion
Science Centers will strengthen basic research into the frontiers of fusion science, a central mission of the department’s fusion energy sciences
program,” Dr. Orbach said. “The centers will train students to meet the U.S. fusion program’s future needs and help our fusion program communicate
about our progress and accomplishments with the broader scientific community.” The University of Maryland and UCLA will jointly host the Center
for Multiscale Plasma Dynamics (CMPD) using facilities at both of the schools. WILLIAM DORLAND, Physics/CSCAMM/IREAP, is the Co-Principal Investigator
and will direct UMD’s participation in CMPD which is housed within the Center for Scientific Computation and Mathematical Modeling (CSCAMM) –
a recent major initiative within the College to promote research activity in new algorithms and mathematical modeling in the physical sciences.
DOE funding for the University of Maryland/UCLA-led Fusion Science Center will total $6.4 million over five years."
